With links to every list per set and per Pokémon. The most expensive Japanese Pokémon card in our top 10 lists is Charizard #6 (No Rarity) from the very first Japanese Expansion Pack, with an indicative value of about €12,030 in ungraded condition. From a set you can still open today, Mega Charizard X ex #116 (MUR) from [Inferno X (M2)](/en/pages/japanse-versie/m2) is the most expensive, at about €596 (PriceCharting, as of October 8, 2026). Which Japanese Pokémon cards are worth the most money? By now we have top 10 lists for sixteen Japanese sets and five popular Pokémon. On this page we put the most expensive cards from all those lists side by side, so you can see at a glance where the real money is. All cards come from our own top 10s. We have not estimated anything: if a card is not on one of our lists, if PriceCharting has no ungraded price for it, or if PriceCharting knows of only one sale, it is not listed here either. ## The most expensive Japanese Pokémon cards from all our top 10s # | Card | Set | Rarity | Value | 1 | [Charizard #6 (No Rarity)](/en/blogs/news/top-10-duurste-japanse-charizard-kaarten) | Expansion Pack | – | €12,030 | 2 | [Charizard Gold Star #52](/en/blogs/news/top-10-duurste-japanse-charizard-kaarten) | Offense and Defense of the Furthest Ends | – | €5,692 | 3 | [Charizard #89](/en/blogs/news/top-10-duurste-japanse-charizard-kaarten) | Mysterious Mountains | – | €5,526 | 4 | [Charizard #89 (1st Ed.)](/en/blogs/news/top-10-duurste-japanse-charizard-kaarten) | Mysterious Mountains | – | €4,901 | 5 | [Gengar #94 (Masaki)](/en/blogs/news/top-10-duurste-japanse-gengar-kaarten) | Promo (1999) | – | €3,797 | 6 | [Charizard EX #276/XY-P](/en/blogs/news/top-10-duurste-japanse-charizard-kaarten) | Promo | – | €3,722 | 7 | [Gengar #47 (1st Ed.)](/en/blogs/news/top-10-duurste-japanse-gengar-kaarten) | Pokémon Card Web | – | €3,664 | 8 | [Mega Charizard Y ex #766](/en/blogs/news/top-10-duurste-japanse-charizard-kaarten) | Start Deck 100 Battle Collection | – | €3,630 | 9 | [Eevee #133 (500 Pt. Prices move: this is a snapshot._ ## What stands out The top 15 consists almost entirely of vintage cards, promos and special releases such as a starter deck. Charizard and Gengar together take twelve of the fifteen spots. The only card from a modern booster in this list is the Umbreon VMAX from Eevee Heroes (2021), better known as the Moonbreon. Age, a small print run and a beloved Pokémon: you see that combination in almost every card in the table. ## The most expensive cards from recent sets Cards you can still pull from a sealed box today are a lot lower. There is no secret formula. With almost every card in the tables, the same three things play a role. **Rarity.** The harder a card is to pull, the higher the price. In modern sets, it is about the highest rarities: SAR (Special Art Rare), SR (Super Rare), UR (the gold Ultra Rare), the BWR (Black White Rare) from [Black Bolt](/en/pages/japanse-versie/sv11b) and [White Flare](/en/pages/japanse-versie/sv11w) and the MUR (Mega Ultra Rare) from the MEGA block. You can read what those abbreviations mean in [AR, SAR, SR and UR: Japanese rarities explained](/en/blogs/news/japanse-zeldzaamheden-ar-sar-sr-ur-uitgelegd). Special finishes count too: a regular card with a [Master Ball pattern](/en/blogs/news/wat-is-een-master-ball-kaart) can be worth more than a SAR from the same set. With vintage and promos, it is mainly the small print run. **The Pokémon itself.** Rarity alone is not enough. In almost every set, the top price goes to a Pokémon with a big following: Charizard, Pikachu, Umbreon, Gengar, Mew or Rayquaza. A gold card of a less popular Pokémon often lags far behind a SAR of a crowd favorite. And the illustration matters: in [Mega Dream ex](/en/pages/japanse-versie/m2a), the Mega Gengar SAR is worth more than the rarer gold MUR of Mega Dragonite. **Grading.** All amounts above are for ungraded cards. A card with a top grade from PSA, BGS or CGC is often worth many times more, but only if the card is truly in top condition. Read more in [grading Japanese cards: PSA, BGS or CGC?](/en/blogs/news/japanse-kaarten-graden-psa-bgs-cgc) and [why Japanese cards score better in grading](/en/blogs/news/japanse-kaarten-beter-graden). What you see here describes today's market. It is not a prediction. Prices of single cards can also drop, especially shortly after a release or after a reprint. ## Check authenticity The more expensive the card, the more important it is to check authenticity. Preferably buy cards in this price range graded, or from a seller who can back up the card. See [recognizing genuine Japanese Pokémon cards: how to check them](/en/blogs/news/echte-japanse-pokemon-kaarten-herkennen) Want to know what your own card is worth? Read [what is your Japanese Pokémon card worth?](/en/blogs/news/japanse-pokemon-kaart-waarde) ## Open them yourself? Most cards from the first table can no longer be pulled yourself. The cards from the second table can, but the chance of exactly that one card is small. If you want a specific card, buy it as a single. You buy a box for the set and for the opening itself.
