What does OVP sealed mean?

OVP sealed means: in the original packaging and never opened. OVP is German for Originalverpackung (original packaging); sealed means the factory shrink wrap is still on it. If a Pokémon box or pack is described as "OVP sealed", the product is factory sealed.

That sounds obvious, but in practice it isn't: there are three levels of sealed, and the difference determines the value.

  • Sealed case — a complete carton of 12 or 20 booster boxes, sealed as a whole by the manufacturer. This is the highest level of certainty.
  • Sealed booster box — one box, individually shrink-wrapped, usually from an opened case.
  • Loose boosters — individual packs. With an unknown seller, their origin can no longer be verified; at Kaikan Cards they come from factory-sealed boxes we open ourselves, without weighing or sorting.

The higher the level, the fewer hands have been in between.

In listings on Marktplaats, eBay and Cardmarket you often see OVP and sealed together, sometimes also as "OVP/sealed" or "sealed OVP". It always means the same thing: original packaging, never opened. Note the difference with resealed: a box that has been opened and shrink-wrapped again. How to recognize that, you'll read further down.

Why collectors buy sealed

The opening itself is the value

A sealed box contains an unknown outcome. That's exactly what it's about — that thrill can't be recreated with single cards you buy on the market. We didn't name ourselves Kaikan (快感) for nothing: the rush of that one perfect pull.

Origin can be verified

With loose packs from an unknown seller, you never know what came before. Packs may have been weighed, and heavier packs more often contain a thick foil card. Whoever does that sells on the light packs — and those end up somewhere. A sealed box rules that out. Our own single packs come from factory-sealed boxes we open ourselves, without weighing or sorting.

Sealed keeps getting scarcer

Every box that gets opened disappears from the supply of sealed copies. For popular sets that aren't reprinted, the remaining supply only gets smaller. That's the reason older sealed boxes usually hold their value better than the single cards from them.

Note: this is a general pattern, not a guarantee. The price of collectibles can also fall, and a set that was mass-produced doesn't automatically become scarce.

What a seal is worth when grading

Anyone who has a card graded wants to prove it came fresh from the pack. With a card from a sealed box you opened yourself, you know that for sure. With a single card from the secondhand market, you don't.

For the very highest scores, every detail counts: corners, edges, surface and centering. Cards that have already passed through someone else's hands have almost always picked up something.

How to check authenticity and the factory seal

This is the reason we only sell factory sealed. If you buy elsewhere, pay particular attention to the shrink wrap (tight, with neat machine-made seams), the weight, a price far below market value and whether the seller can explain where it came from. All the checkpoints, with photos of genuine Japanese boxes, are on authenticity and origin; more on checking the seal: how to check a factory-sealed booster box

Frequently asked questions about OVP and sealed

What does sealed mean?

Sealed means the product is still in the wrap it left the factory in and has never been opened. For Pokémon cards, that applies to booster boxes, packs, Elite Trainer Boxes and complete cases.

What does factory sealed mean?

Factory sealed means the seal was applied by the manufacturer, not by a store or seller. That's the difference with resealed: there, someone has opened the packaging and closed it again.

What does OVP mean on Cardmarket?

The same as everywhere: original packaging. Cardmarket is based in Germany, so you often see the German abbreviation in descriptions there. "OVP" alone says the packaging is original; only with "sealed" added do you know it has never been opened.

Is OVP the same as sealed?

Not exactly. OVP says the product is in its original packaging; sealed says that packaging is still closed. An opened box in its original carton is OVP, but not sealed. That's why listings often say "OVP sealed" or "OVP/sealed": both at once.
