The most striking thing about this list
The top 2 is all Zekrom: the BWR (#174) and the SAR (#169) sit far above the rest, with a gap of more than a hundred euros between number one and two. Even more striking is Seismitoad in third place — a regular Art Rare that leaves almost all SAR ex cards behind, purely on the strength of its illustration.
What is a BWR?
This double set introduced a completely new rarity category: the Black White Rare, or BWR for short. Cards with a monochrome foil treatment that references the original Black & White card design from 2011.
Only three exist in total: Zekrom ex in Black Bolt, and Reshiram ex plus Victini in White Flare. Read more in what is a BWR?
Opening data from the Japanese community points to roughly one BWR per two to four cases — 24 to 48 boxes. In other words: most people who open a box will never see this card.
So don't buy this set with that card as your goal. That's exactly how people get disappointed in a hobby that is otherwise a lot of fun.
Why you open it anyway
Precisely because the rest is so well stocked. Opening data across both sets points to a hit rate of about 50% per pack — one of the most generous ratios in recent Pokémon history.
With 72 Art Rares and seven cards per pack, you're opening something nice almost constantly. That makes it one of the most enjoyable boxes to rip, whether or not that Zekrom shows up.
What to expect per box
- 20 packs of 7 cards
- 72 Art Rares in this set
- Every Unova Pokémon has at least one AR or SAR version
- Hit rate around 50% per pack
- BWR: about 1 per 24 to 48 boxes
Black Bolt or White Flare?
The two sets were released at the same time and both draw from the same 156 Unova Pokémon, but each has its own SARs, SRs and ARs.
Black Bolt revolves around Zekrom and the black, electric side. White Flare around Reshiram and fire. Collectors usually buy them together, and many people keep them sealed as a pair.
If you want the complete Unova series, you need both sets. Also take a look at the top 10 most expensive White Flare cards. Both boxes are among the booster boxes.
Japanese or English?
The English release came out on July 18, 2025 under the same name. Note: a few card lines were shifted between the two sets, so don't assume a card is in the same set in English as in Japanese. View all Japanese sets in the shop.
